RECORDED CRIME - OFFENDERS, 2013-14 - NORTHERN TERRITORY
TOTAL OFFENDERS
- In 2013-14, there were 13,116 offenders in the Northern Territory, which represented an increase of 19% (or 2,093 offenders) from 2012-13.
- The (crude) offender rate increased by 16% from 5,498 in 2012-13 to 6,358 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over in 2013-14.
SEX
Between 2012-13 and 2013-14:
- The number of male offenders increased by 16% (or 1,321 offenders) to 9,458; and
- The number of female offenders increased by 27% (or 773 offenders) to 3,643.
AGE
Between 2012-13 and 2013-14:
- The median age of offenders remained stable at 30 years; and
- The number of youth offenders increased by 51% (or 822 offenders) from 1,603 to 2,425.
AGE STANDARDISED OFFENDER RATES
- In 2013-14, the age standardised offender rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was 9,090 offenders per 100,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 10 years and over.
- The age standardised offender rate for non-Indigenous people was 1,107 offenders per 100,000 non-Indigenous persons aged 10 years and over.
PRINCIPAL OFFENCE
In 2013-14, the five most common principal offences in the Northern Territory were:
- Public order offences (4,676 offenders or 36% of the total);
- Acts intended to cause injury (3,451 offenders or 26% of the total);
- Illicit drug offences (1,157 offenders or 9% of the total);
- Offences against justice (728 offenders or 6% of the total); and
- Theft (466 offenders or 4% of the total).
REPEAT OFFENDERS
In 2013-14, 34% of offenders were proceeded against on two or more separate occasions within the year.
POLICE PROCEEDINGS
In 2013-14, the total number of police proceedings increased by 28% (or 4,996
proceedings) from 2012-13.
- Court actions increased by 21% (or 1,992 proceedings). Acts intended to cause injury was the most common offence proceeded against by court actions, accounting for 36% of all court actions (or 4,197 proceedings).
- Non-court actions increased by 37% (or 3,002 proceedings). Public order offences was the most common offence proceeded against by non-court actions, accounting for 85% of all non-court actions (or 9,475 proceedings).
OTHER KEY POINTS
In 2013-14, the Northern Territory had;
- The largest percentage increase in offenders for Australia (19% or 2,093 offenders);
- The highest proportion of offenders proceeded against on five or more separate occasions (5% or 646 offenders);
- The highest offender rate for the principal offence of Acts intended to cause injury (1,673 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over); and
- The highest youth offender rate, at 7,241 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10-19 years.
